secretly…haven’t you? It’s cool to make the transit from Atlantic to
Pacific! It’s amazing to conceive of concrete locks with walls 1,000
feet long and 81 feet high.
Panama Canal, canal across the Isthmus of Panama, in Central America,
that allows vessels to travel between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
The waterway measures 64 km (40 mi), including dredged approach channels
at each end. The Panama Canal handles a large volume of world shipping
and enables vessels to avoid traveling around South America, reducing
their voyages by thousands of miles and many days.
And best of all, it’s all the more appealing aboard Wind Song or Wind
Star, as she gracefully sails through three mighty locks, the dramatic
Gaillard Cut, and Gatun Lake. West of the Canal lie the pristine
Panamanian islands of Coiba and Contadora, ideal for water sports. East
